-------- Original Message -------- Subject: High Performance Cluster Computing Errata Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 13:31:32 +0100 From: Tomas Hansen Organization: Schlumberger Geco-Prakla To: rajkumar@csse.monash.edu.au Hi Rajkumar! I bought your two cluster computing books from Amazon and even though I admit skipping some chapters I was impressed by how readable the text was. I have little background in mathematics, I mostly do programming and consulting. I noticed that your errata is rather small and only cover one of the two books. I have a Palm Pilot so I recorded misspellings and such since you'll probarly need to press new books later as cluster computing is becoming more and more popular. Here goes: Book 1, Chapter 4.54, Page 108. "Idle notification" Last sentence "In this context, periodic rejuvenation on idle oeriods (planned downtime) can effectively INCREASE the unplanned downtime of the application." I thought the result would be a DECREASE in unplanned downtime since the software was restarted periodically and had not run for extensive periods of time. --- Book 1, Chapter 10.3.4, Page 251. Active Messages, 2. section, last sentence "Moreover, with proper HARDARWARE support it becomes easier to overlap communication with computation." Just a simple misspelling. --- Book 1, Chapter 13.1, Page 317. Introduction to ATM networking, section 2, first sentence. "Present trends in computing indicate that the material that needs to be transported between machines in future is bound to become rich in MULTIMDEDIA content." Just a simple misspelling. --- Book 2, Chapter 3.6.1, Page 83. Initial Environment Setup, second sentence, first two words "as" repeated two times at the beginning of the sentence. --- Book 2, 12.6.1, Page 271, 5 sentence. "Both these machines had Windows NT 4.0 operating system and were connected by a 10MB Ethernet." I suppose you mean 10Mb Ethernet. --- Book 2, 14.5.2, Page 304, The HPF Code example The keywords should probarly not be POCESSOR and TEMPLET, but rather PROCESSOR and TEMPLATE. --- Hope this helps your books a little bit further in the direction of total perfection ;-) Have a nice day!
