Doctoral Study Migration History

• While working at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Bangalore, India in 1997, I applied for PhD admission @ the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane. Actually, I also applied to few other Australian (top?) universities and got admission from most of them with scholarships covering full fees, health, and living expenses for me and my family! I proposed to research on: A Single System Image Operating System Layer for Clusters or Wide-area Distributed Systems.
• When I joined for the doctoral program @ QUT in 1998 with Clemens Szyperski now @ Microsoft Research, I (aligned with group priorities) proposed to work on I/O under Process Migration (as part of the Gardens project) that resulted in a new research proposal: An Adaptive Parallel File System for Clusters. The work at QUT has resulted in a number of research publications in conference proceedings, journals, and books including books and journal editorials (see my publications during 1998-99). Of course, the community we built during the development of cluster computing book has influenced on the formation of a IEEE Task Force on Cluster Computing (TFCC).
• In 1999, my supervisor @ QUT moved to Microsoft Research, I then migrated (fortunately IPRS scholarship was transferable) to Monash University in Melbourne to work with a new supervisor, David Abramson. Then on I associated with Grid Computing projects such as Nimrod-G and actively initiated new projects such as Grid Economy, GRACE, Compute Power Market, World-Wide Grid testbed, Virtual Laboratory, Grid Infoware, and GridSim. Yes, to some extent, I had to adapt myself again to my supervisor's current interests, which means changing thesis direction.
• In 2000, I again migrated to a new campus, but within Monash University: from Clayton to Caulfield Campus to join DSTC Monash.
• In 2001, I again had to migrate to a new office, but within the same campus/building to suit to the plans/wishes of administrative people!, who logically partitioned the Level 5 offices in Building C into DSSE and DSTC. I happens to be in a nice office with window on DSTC side, I was forced to migrate a windowless office sharing with others/visitors towards the DSSE side. I hope there is no more migration until I am awarded (earn) a title "Dr." :-)
